Match Point: Why Human Ingenuity Decides the Future

Every year, Elevate Connect London brings together our community of leaders from complex, highly regulated markets like insurance to step away from the daily noise and talk candidly about where our industry is headed.

In our third gathering at the Four Seasons Hotel London at Tower Bridge, one reality anchored every conversation: everyone now has access to intelligent technology. Cognitive platforms and automated models are available across the market. In an instant, technology has democratised information and made knowledge accessible to all.
Universal access, however, does not create commercial distinction.

The true differentiator in complex markets is straightforward. The machine possesses the knowledge, but only the human brings ingenuity, lived context, critical judgement, and genuine empathy. Technology surfaces calculations and patterns in seconds, but it cannot read the room, understand client vulnerabilities, or make the nuanced calls that protect an organisation’s reputation.

That was the central theme of the day: AI Predicts. Humans Decide.
Throughout the afternoon, leaders from Miller Insurance, UiPath, AUB Group, Hampden Risk Partners, Oneglobal, and Aventum Group explored where that commercial line sits in practice. The consensus across our community was clear: technology must enhance human capability, never dilute what makes a specialty firm distinctive. Applying algorithms to unverified data or broken processes simply accelerates poor outcomes.

James Welch

Head of Delivery, Miller Insurance Services LLP

From the Session – Miller Insurance’s AI Vision & Approach
“Anything that impacts our brand or takes us away from what makes us special is a red flag. We don’t automate to replace our people, we automate to protect what makes us distinct.”

Ben Ormerod

Chief Data Officer, Hampden Risk Partners

From the Session – Data & AI: The Good Enough Session
“AI can accelerate decisions. If you’ve used the wrong level of data, it can accelerate poor decisions.”

The sustainable advantage comes from treating technology as an active partner rather than an automated replacement.
In elite doubles sport, you partner with someone who complements your weaknesses and covers the court where you cannot. The machine brings scale, processing power, and analytical speed. The human brings the empathy to identify the actual business problem, the discipline to redesign the workflow, and the courage to challenge the system when a confident output is commercially flawed.

Hasani Jess

Group CTO, Aventum Group

From the Session – Playing Doubles with AI
“AI is intoxicatingly familiar. It gives us the impression that something is really simple and easy because we can all interact with it. But partnering with it takes skill, expertise and practice.”

Mayank

Founder & CEO, ADROSONIC

From the Session – Playing Doubles with AI
“What is the point of claiming that I can do an analysis better or that my interpretation will be better? As humans, we have limitations. There is no way we can compete with AI at everything. But what we can do is read the room… If I partner with AI, I am sure that, as humans, we can win a lot of Grand Slams.”

We are all working to achieve significant ambitions, both in our personal careers and across the organisations we build. Technology can accelerate that journey, but it cannot supply the human purpose behind it.

When knowledge is available to everyone, human ingenuity remains the deciding factor.

That is match point.
